About this interview

In July 2026, IGN watched Rob Nelson — Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North — play 30 unscripted minutes of Grand Theft Auto VI, talking through the game as he went. IGN ran the highlights in August alongside the Extended Look; on 7 October 2026 it published the full transcript.

We already cover the August headlines across GTA Codex — the Criminal Profile, salons and safehouses, the optional romance and the reworked car theft. This article collects what the full transcript adds. Everything below is Rob Nelson describing the build he was playing; Rockstar notes that details can change before launch.

The world watches you back

Nelson's big theme is that Leonida is no longer a world where you are the only dangerous person in it. Other people have impulses of their own — gangs, armed bystanders, random encounters — and the world will act on you, not just react.

  • NPCs notice eavesdropping. You can stop and listen to ambient conversations, but stand too close for too long and the group turns round to ask what you want. Follow someone closely enough that they can hear you and they may get aggressive — or just try to get away.
  • A dedicated dialogue team. To fill a dense modern city with believable chatter, Rockstar built an entirely new team of writers, directors and producers in Los Angeles just for ambient dialogue.
  • Bodies that actually fit together. NPCs come in a much wider range of heights and body shapes because animations are now retargeted on the fly, so a short and a tall character can fight, sit in a car or interact without clipping.
  • Rockstar's team has doubled in size, partly to handle the density of the world.

Laying low after a crime

The wanted system is built around a hit-and-run style: commit the crime, get out before the police arrive, and avoid escalating. A crime only becomes a police matter if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off. The transcript adds several practical details:

  • A new outfit clears heat. Police know what you're wearing. A pair of glasses and a baseball cap won't fool them, and a new haircut changes your look but not your clothes — buying and wearing a new outfit removes heat. Your personal vehicle can carry spare outfits in the trunk for exactly this.
  • Ditch the car at three stars. In the city, outrunning a three-star response by car is hard unless you have a very fast car or a sports bike. Nelson's advice: get off the streets and escape on foot through the alleys.
  • Split up. Police know you're a couple; separating Jason and Lucia — or switching to a car they haven't seen — lowers their perception of you.
  • Advanced trackers ping. Some stolen cars carry an advanced tracker (a blinking red light). Drive too slowly and it reports your position, so you have to keep the speed up.
  • Busted is still Busted. If either protagonist is arrested it's a classic restart — there's no separate jail system.
  • Adrenaline appeared during the escape as a temporary boost to help break away.

Making money matters

Nelson says money matters more in GTA VI's story than in previous games: at points you'll need to earn money in the open world to advance the mission flow — by boosting and selling cars or robbing stores. In the demo:

  • A car fence provided a door code for a police impound lot holding a car they wanted. Jason spotted the lot unprompted and suggested the job — dialogue Nelson hadn't heard himself.
  • The stolen car could be repaired before delivery, because the fence pays less for a damaged vehicle. (Nelson thought it "looks like an Infernus".)
  • Inside a store, the safe's combination could be tracked down; an explosive was quicker but would damage part of the take, and a back door offered an escape when police stacked up out front.
  • Ryde Me, the in-game ride-hailing service, doubles as fast travel — and you can chat with the passenger or driver on the way.

Jason, Lucia and the relationship

  • Their own routines. Switch to the other protagonist and they might be at the safehouse — or out doing their own thing (in the demo, Jason was in the shower).
  • Keep in touch. You can text or call your partner at any time. If they message to say they're heading to bed and you don't reply at all, it can dent the relationship.
  • Quality time is broad. Robbing places together counts, but so do walks, holding hands, the zoo, studying animals, scuba diving, parachuting, kayaking and beach strolls.
  • Gym 2-for-1. Go to the gym together and both start working out, raising both characters' stats at once.
  • Snapmatic, but read-only. You can follow accounts and browse, but you can't post — you're a couple on the run.
  • The ankle tag seen in the trailer is part of the story and part of how Jason and Lucia are brought together.
  • The safehouse in the demo isn't theirs — they're staying in someone else's home.

Missions that open up

Rockstar still uses tightly directed sequences where the story needs them, but tries to open missions up wherever it can:

  • The tower-block escape from the Extended Look has multiple routes out.
  • The mission where the pair pick up Raul starts on rails (Jason shooting, Lucia driving), then hands over control; ignore the suggested route and you can still escape, because it's essentially a systemic police chase.
  • When your partner drives and you shoot back during an open-world escape, a well-timed tyre shot or a last-second dash across a train crossing can make free roam feel like a scripted mission — something Nelson calls new for Rockstar.
  • Unlike Red Dead Redemption 2, there are no lumber-yard-style choices that visibly change how a town develops — but there are lots of choices, big and small, and the small ones add up.

How Rockstar thinks about satire

Because of its long development cycle, Rockstar avoids jokes about fast-moving political issues or memes that would date badly, and keeps the characters away from very current slang so they feel timeless.

The bottom line

The full transcript doesn't overturn anything from August — it fills in the texture. GTA VI is built so you can simply exist in Leonida as Jason and Lucia, apart or together, while still getting the chaotic GTA experience when you want it.
